The Easy Step By Step DIY Artificial Turf Laying

Step 1.

Prepare Your Surface

Remove all existing grass and weeds. You do this by scraping with a metal garden rake and use a pick to dig out the larger weeds and surface tree roots.

Step 2.

Clean Up Your Edging

Now you scrape away the existing ground to about 20mm below the finished height of any adjoining paved areas or garden edging.

Step 3.

Compact your soil

Dampen your subsoil lightly with water before you compact. You should use a whacker packer or garden roller to do the job effectively.

Step 4.

Adding your roadbase

Now spread a layer of roadbase, or crusher dust, to about 15mm deep. Make sure you distribute it evenly with a steel rake then sprinkle with water before you compact it with the whacker packer.

Step 5.

Laying your turf

To get a smooth flat surface fill any surface dips or hollows with fine sand. Now lay out your first roll of turf allowing it to overhang at the ends. You will later be trimming this to match the edge of the paving.

Step 6.

Cut to size

Trim your turf roughly around any garden edges and move it into position. Then with a sharp utility knife, trim accurately around the edges. It is advisable to use a new blade often as you find that they blunt quickly.

Step 7.

Lay your second roll

Lay out your second roll of turf and trim to size. Fold back the edge and apply an even coat of turf adhesive to the seaming material. It helps to use a 3mm notched trowel for even coverage.

Step 8.

You want invisible Seams

When the adhesive becomes slightly stringy bring the two sheets together. Make sure you don’t leave any turf fibers trapped in the seam and smooth the sides down.

Step 9.

Anchor your turf

It is best if you use 150mm irrigation pins around the perimeter of your turf. These you should space throughout the area in an approximate 600mm grid pushing the fibres of turf away from under the pins so they sit flush with the surface.

Step 10.

Casting your sand

To weight you turf down and keep it in position. Cast a layer of dry, white, washed sand over the turf with a shovel. This also will assist you with drainage.

Step 11.

Sweeping in your sand

Distribute your sand evenly with a yard broom, sweeping against the direction of turf fibres. Cast more sand and repeat the process until the sand is about 10mm deep.

Step 12.

Water

Put away the hosepipe, as the natural-looking turf will stay this way for years. Just use a rake, broom or outdoor vacuum to keep your lawn immaculate.
